Retro looks, fun to drive, versatile and efficient. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel wagons that inspired its design.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr is similar in concept to the chrysler pt cruiser.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and side cargo doors with no handles. The cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it's plainer inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive of the hhr models, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. Options for the ls include remote start, the automatic transmission 1,000), running boards, a spoiler, and a variety of other factory and dealer-installed features and accessories.  the hhr lt 19,720) adds remote start as standard (but only with the automatic transmission), an eight-way power driver's seat, driver's lumbar support, and the availability of many more optional extras, including a bright chrome appearance package.  the hhr 2lt adds the lt equipment group 1,700), which includes the 2. 4-liter engine, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, fog lamps, running boards, fe3 sport suspension, bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, and a pioneer audio system with seven speakers and 260 watts.  the hhr ss 26,255) adds the turbocharged engine, performance handling suspension, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, ss embroidered seats, a rear spoiler, and other items. Optional on the ss is the performance package 895).  the hhr panel comes in ls 19,030) and lt 20,030) versions. Options and prices for the panel are the same as for the equivalent levels of the non-panel versions.  one interesting option for the ls and lt utility versions are solid rear quarter panels 195), which close in the rear sides and give a look somewhat between the utility and the panel models.  safety features include front airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling of the chevy hhr, though the whole retro craze is getting long in the tooth. The closest comparison is the chrysler pt cruiser, another retro-styled utility vehicle with good fuel efficiency.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined, with flat side wheel-well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with nostalgic integrated running boards. The flush glass all around, including the windshield, is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The taillamp treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide, enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear liftgate. The cargo doors are smooth and don't have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits lower than its stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for a single bright exhaust tip. Rocker moldings somewhat resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above the rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and the rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and liftgate, further differentiate the ss from the others. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides, for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Included are durable, easy-to-clean cargo surfaces, a front passenger seat that folds flat for more cargo space, a 60/40 split/fold-flat second-row seat, and a multi-position cargo package tray in the rear that provides cargo security. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat, and, since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the right, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally, a nice feature. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear liftgate is one piece and raises easily.  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor with tie-down points to help hold things in place. The hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats of the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. The 2. 4-liter delivers 172 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 167 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. The torque peak figure at such a high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. Faced with a steep, slow hill, the hhr worked its way upward like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. Denali luxury now with crew cab room. introductionthe gmc sierra is nearly identical to the chevy silverado but features more mature, restrained styling. With their 5-foot, 8-inch cargo box, sierra crew cabs are no longer than standard-bed, extended-cab models for easier parking and maneuverability. The 1500hd crew cab, which returns for 2005 after a one-year hiatus, can tow up to 10,200 pounds. Even the plush denali tows 8,100 pounds.  yet all sierras deliver a smooth, comfortable ride among the full-size pickups. Even compared to more recently introduced or re-engineered pickups from ford, dodge, and nissan, the sierra rides and handles very well. Although nominally classified as light duty or 'half-ton' trucks, the 1500s offer payloads ranging from 1,215 to 2,040 pounds, and tow ratings from 4,100 up to 9,000 pounds, depending on equipment. That's all the truck most consumers will ever need.  engine choices include a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, and 5. 3-liter v8. Available only as a crew cab with a 6-foot-6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot-8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the same 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500; but the 1500hd should ride more smoothly than the heavy-duty trucks.  base models come with abs, air conditioning, cruise control, am/fm/cd audio, an attractive chrome grille molding, a chrome rear step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. Carpeting and cloth seats are also standard. Regular and extended cabs are available, but not the crew cab, base prices range from $21,045 to $31,270.  the w/t (work truck) model deletes the cd player, chrome, cruise control and carpeting. These plane-jane trucks are aimed at commercial and municipal fleets, with prices ranging from $18,770 to $29,540.  sle trim adds fog lamps; power windows, mirrors, and door locks; a leather-wrapped steering wheel; overhead console; and other amenities. Leather upholstery is optional. The 4. 8-liter v8 and automatic transmission are standard on regular and extended cabs; crew cabs come with the 5. 3 and automatic. Prices range from $25,755 to $34,140.  slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds automatic dual-zone air conditioning, leather upholstery, power-adjustable bucket seats with heat and memory, floor console, heated outside mirrors, new gen6 onstar telecommunications and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard, with a higher-performing, all-aluminum 5. 3 in 4wd extended cabs. Denali comes with tone-on-tone leather, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, and other exclusive amenities. It's equipped with steering wheel controls for the audio system, gen6 onstar, trip computer, and other programmable functions. Quadrasteer reduces sierra's curb-to-curb turning diameter by 26 percent and enhances high-speed stability. It comes packaged 1,995) with a limited-slip differential, heavy-duty brakes and clearance lights. walkaroundthe front styling of the gmc sierra ties it closely to the mid-size gmc envoy, and to some of the great gmc pickups of the past. The chrome-framed grille consists of three black horizontal bars that prominently display a big red gmc emblem. Chromed front bumpers include two airflow cutouts. Up-level models have a body-colored lower front fascia; base models have a light-charcoal fascia. An optional grille/brush guard adds front-end protection. A single onstar roof antenna combines the gps and cell-phone functions.  compared with the chevrolet silverado, gmc's styling is more conservative, more mature, with smoother, more sophisticated lines. Its chromed mesh grille looks like something from a hot-rod shop. Projector-beam headlamps and unique front fascia and fog lamps add up-market distinction, along with body color on the door handles, side moldings, tailgate handle, outside mirrors, rear bumper and tonneau cover. Chrome running boards with integral mud guards further distinguish the denali from other sierras.  for 2005, nearly all sierras come with 17-inch wheels: painted steel on work trucks, chromed steel on base and sle, aluminum on slt and polished aluminum on denali. The only exceptions are the 1500hd and the hybrid, which make do with 16-inch rims. Denali models are available with 20-inch wheels for a stronger styling statement.  the load height (the distance from the ground to the bed) for 2wd sierra models is just 31. 6 inches. For 4wd models, it's 33. 7 inches. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large steel components. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. interiorthe gmc sierra cab remains among the roomiest in the industry, with large door openings to aid entry and exit. The seats are big and cushy. Other pickup owners find the gm seats more to their liking. Also, the interior door handles are ropey and awkward.  the instrument cluster features highly legible gauges with white backlighting and orange pointers. The denali's gauges are unique and feature blue backlighting and white pointers. A driver information center reports on as many as 27 vehicle functions with an easy-to-read, single-line lcd display. A compass is incorporated into the overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items.  audio and climate controls are sophisticated, yet easy to operate. The system comes with am, fm1, fm2, xm1, and xm2 bands. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls (on slt and denali) make it easy to switch among station presets and modes. The retrowagon gets a facelift. introductionthe 2006 chrysler pt cruiser features its first significant facelift in six years. Inside and out, the new look is best described as more modern, but not so much so as to spoil the pt's toy-hot-rod fun.  chrysler pt cruiser combines the retro look of late-'30s american iron with modern performance, efficiency and features. It doesn't fit within existing automotive marketing segments.  the pt cruiser is based on the dodge neon, a compact car noted for sprightly performance. It comes in two body styles, a versatile five-door model and a two-door convertible.  the five-door model's tall body boasts lots of room for people and cargo. In fact, its interior volume and versatility compare well to a small suv. Yet the pt cruiser is shorter in length than a neon, making it easy to park. The lower-level models are competitively priced, and we think they make the most sense.  pricier turbocharged models add fire under the hood. For 2006, the fire has been turned up to 230 horsepower in the gt model. A more affordable 180-horsepower turbo is also available.  the convertible is one of the least expensive on the market. The gt also comes with side-impact airbags, a power glass sunroof, and most of the limited's luxury goodies. Leather sport seats are also standard. The gt convertible 27,930) comes with all the limited and gt sedan goodies, and for '06 its 17-inch wheels are chrome-plated, just like the sedan's.  optional on all convertibles and on limited and gt sedans is a new boston acoustics premium sound system (replacing last year's infinity system), but retaining the same 368-watt peak output. Sirius satellite radio is optional on all models this year 195, including a one-year subscribtion). Gps navigation 1100) is available on limited and gt; so is uconnect hands-free, in-vehicle communications 360), which uses bluetooth technology to link the user's cellular phone with the cruiser's stereo speakers. Limited sedans can be ordered with plastic woodgrain exterior accents 895) for the vintage town & country look. Many of the standard features on higher-line models are also available as options on the less expensive models.  safety features include front side-impact airbags, standard in gt and limited and optional 390) on the other models. Seatbelts should always be worn, however, and the pt cruiser comes with three-point safety harnesses at all positions, including the rear center position. The front belts have pyrotechnically charged tensioners, just like in luxury cars, to tighten the belts for the initial stages of an impact. T. walkaroundthe chrysler pt cruiser blends the retro look of a late-1930's or early 1940's american sedan with new-age styling cues such as dual-beam flush headlights and teardrop-shaped taillight lenses.  the look has been refined for the 2006 models, but not drastically changed. Chrysler says the pt cruiser now has the face of chrysler, which seems to translate into a more horizontal-themed grille that no longer extends down below the bumper, topped by a more prominent chrysler eagle and flanked by gently scalloped headlamps. Round foglights now frame a horizontal slot in the bumper. Around back, a new body-color spoiler on the liftgate is said to improve aerodynamic efficiency.  in terms of exterior dimensions, the pt cruiser is quite compact. It's nearly 6 inches shorter than a neon. Yet with 63 inches from the pavement to the highest point of its roof, the cruiser sedan is also 7 inches taller than the neon, and nearly as tall as some minivans. That height is a crucial element of the pt cruiser's design.  the design of the convertible is quite a bit different from that of the sedan. The convertible looks shorter than the sedan, but isn't; maybe it's the single long door on each side that creates this illusion. It's certainly lower, by almost 3 inches, which certainly alters the looks. But there's a lot more to it than that: close examination reveals that the windshield is raked more radically and uses a different a-pillar design. With the top up, the convertible looks like a custom chopped-top hot rod. Pretty cool.  drop the top and the gangstermobile turns into a chick car. With its top down, the pt cruiser convertible's high tail and integrated sport bar remind us of the old volkswagen cabrio. But where the vw's side windows sealed against its sport bar, the chrysler's windows seal against each other for a more modern convertible profile. Its slightly narrower and color-keyed sport bar sits behind the windows, inside the car, and is aerodynamically designed to minimize wind noise. A nice boot is provided that dresses up the appearance with the top down. Less obvious improvements for 2006: all instruments are now bigger, the radio is mounted higher, the glovebox is larger, and the glovebox door is now damped.  the driver still faces three white-faced gauges set in individual cylinders, with speedometer center, tachometer right and fuel and water temperature left. The gt's silver-faced speedometer reads up to 140 mph, while the standard cruiser's speedo goes to 120. Window switches are still high in the center stack, inconvenient for quick operation, forcing the driver to search for them. The door levers have a nice action, and the switches operate with good tactile feel, though they're not world class. The standard stereo sounds tinny; we haven't tried the new boston accoustics system. Also, there's a separate set button for the station presets, fussier than simply holding the preset down.  a bonus of the cruiser's tall profile is its upright seating position, with a fairly high view ahead, somewhat like a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. The gt also features a leather wrapped steering wheel with satin-silver spokes, and bright accents on the pedals.  a redesigned center console now incorporates a sliding armrest, replacing the seat-mounted armrests provided previously. The new console also includes a covered tray for concealing small items, a storage bin that holds six cds, a new coin holder and fold-out cup holders for rear-seat coffee.

It can move lots of people or lots of gear on a moment's notice. And it comes standard with a long list of safety equipment. Ordered with the optional v6, the rav4 is a regular hot rod, scooting around with 269 horsepower. We prefer the five-passenger configuration.  2009 toyota rav4 models get new options including a reverse monitor and touch-screen navigation, and all models come with integrated satellite radio. Also new for 2009 are active headrests for the front seats. 2009 rav4 limited models come with a new smart entry feature that unlocks the doors for anyone carrying the key fob. lineupthe 2009 toyota rav4 comes in three trim levels: base 21,500), sport 23,200) and limited 24,490). The v6 is upgraded with p225/65r17 tires on styled steel wheels. Also standard for 2009 is a new rear spoiler. A coefficient of drag (cd) of 0. 33 is among the best in its segment and a major factor in minimizing wind noise and maximizing fuel economy.  the rav4's truck-like front end is tautly composed. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused.  grille, bumpers, and fog light surrounds are all new for 2009. Most noticeable are the new, vertical brake scoops, lined with black ribs, that bite into the bumper beneath the headlights, where the fog lights used to be. (fog lights nestle into these scoops on sport models.) more subtle is the way the main grille now integrates better with the cooling slit just beneath it, while the formerly full-width slit beneath that has been replaced by three smaller slots.  limiteds have a look all their own, with a single, deep, trapezoidal grille opening bolding bisected by a body-color horizontal bar with a large, chrome toyota world-t badge at its center. A pseudo-skid plate wraps up from the bottom, leaving no room for additional lower air intakes. Tubular nacelles supporting the fog lights replace the brake scoops of base and sport models. None of these changes, fortunately, has affected the rav4's low coefficient of drag.  alloy wheels have five spokes on sport, six on limited. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. The fat, triangular c-pillar with the taillight at its base reminds us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. The taillights are new for 2009, as is the bumper itself, but the changes here are more subtle than at the front. Taillights are positioned high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. The sport model's spoiler hangs conspicuously off the top edge of the roof.  the new sport appearance package for 2009 eliminates the spare entirely, and centers the license plate up high beneath a bright metal strip that's just beneath another world-t badge that is just under the window. A bulge low down on the tailgate fills in the step in the standard bumper when the tailgate is closed. A handle on the left side still betrays the gate's swing-open design, but in spite of this the overall look with the sport appearance package is remarkably more car-like, more station wagon than suv. interiorinside, the 2009 rav4 is as good as ever, which is to say functional if a bit eccentric in style.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The current dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality. The standard seat fabric has been upgraded for 2009. Fit and finish is toyota grade, which means excellent. All three trim levels share the same motif, with contrasting but complementary colors and brushed metallic trim elements around the stereo and climate controls, surrounding the shift gate and swooping around the door handles. This means the overall length and wheelbase can vary tremendously, the latter from 120 inches to 157. 4. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine for the base-level xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that generates 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and regular cab xlt, and standard in all others. A 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 260 horsepower is available as an option for most f-150s. All three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can be promoted to ultimate king ranch status, with leather captain's chairs, premium audio, and unique identification.  i love the supercrew, which features luxurious rear-seat accommodations that can be converted into covered cargo storage. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The top-rung lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with handsome leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  for 2002, even base-level xls are air conditioned. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models.  with colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. And this matrix includes some specialty models.  new for 2002 is the fx4 off-road package, which includes 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with exposed lug nuts, rancho-brand shocks, three skid plates, a 3. 55 axle and p265/70r17 white-outline tires. The fx4 package is available only on 4x4 models, but the package price ranges from $620-$1165 depending on trim level and body style.  the high-performance svt lightning, packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Specialized wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited production image-generator is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch wheelbase.  also available for 2002 is a new limited-edition ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine, unique styling cues and a new color option: dark shadow grey. The 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is the third truck jointly developed by ford motor company and harley-davidson motor company. (it joins two other limited-edition models: the 2000 ford harley-davidson f-150 super cab and the 2001 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car than the dodge, chevy, or gmc. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram has been redesigned for 2002, but retains a retro look that won't appeal to everyone (at least not as intensely as it appeals to its die-hard fans).  the f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when navigating in tight city traffic. Like the ram, however, its fenders seem to fill small rural roads. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  the 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew incorporates styling cues of the past with an innovative flair. The front end of the vehicle features a new upper chrome billet grille, clear-lens headlamps and clear-lens parking lamps embossed with the harley-davidson bar & shield. For 2002, a distinct rivet design surrounds the center of the 20x9-inch five-spoke chromed cast-aluminum wheels, complementing the center caps that display the harley-davidson bar & shield. Flame pin striping and chrome accessories complement the overall package. As in the past, the ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is lowered one inch. It features a specially tuned exhaust system with a dual inlet/dual outlet muffler, ending in chrome 3 1/2-inch 'slash cut' exhaust tips. interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice place to change into and out of driver's suits when we go racing.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat luggage space. It's a great place to put cargo or big dogs. I like putting all my equipment back there when i go fly fishing. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. This is because they use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear.  up front, the 2wd pickups use a coil-spring independent suspension, while the 4x4 versions use a torsion bar front suspension.  power steering is over-assisted, to make it easier to park and maneuver in tight quarters.  we find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. Mustang picks up the pace. introductionford's mustang was the first of a new breed of factory hot rod--the 'pony car'--when it was launched back in 1964, and during the decades that followed it's stuck largely to the same genetic coding: high performance, low tech and low cost.  with a simple rear-drive chassis borrowed from a sedan and lots of components borrowed from other ford vehicle lines, the mustang has always been relatively cheap to produce, delivering lots of performance at bargain prices.  however, in terms of maximum performance, the mustang's formula has, in recent years, fallen behind the pace set by gm's camaro-firebird twins. Ford's durable old 5. 0-liter v8 simply didn't match the muscle of gm's 5. 7-liter v8, which bristles with torque and horsepower.  so for 1996, ford answers the challenge with a new engine. The overhead valve 5. 0-liter has been replaced with ford's much more sophisticated 4. 6-liter v8, an engine with better volumetric efficiency as well as better emissions performance. The mustang gt receives the single overhead cam version, similar to the engine used in the ford crown victoria and lincoln town car. With 215 hp and 285 lb.-ft. Of torque, it delivers roughly the same performance as the old 5. 0-liter.  but if sizzling go-power is the objective, ford now has an answer for the camaro z28 and firebird trans am. The new mustang cobra has the dual overhead cam, 32-valve version of the 4. 6-liter v8, and in cobra tune it throbs with 305 hp and 300 lb.-ft. At the entry end is the basic mustang, powered by a 3. 8-liter v6 that provides good torque and satisfactory performance for those who want mustang style but aren't obsessed with zero-to-60 mph times.  each model level is available as a coupe or convertible. Because of the extra structure needed to compensate for the absence of a steel top, convertibles invariably weigh more than their coupe counterparts.  there aren't many options for the cobra, which is well equipped as is. The only other available option is mystic clearcoat metallic paint, an irridescent finish that seems to change color depending on viewing and/or light angles. Ford thinks this is very snazzy indeed; we don't agree, particularly for $815.  the functional standard equipment list for the cobra includes antilock brakes, limited-slip differential and 17-in. Aluminum alloy wheels mounting 245/45zr-17 high performance tires. The transmission is a 5-speed manual, natch, and there's no automatic transmission option.  like the rest of the running gear, the huge brakes--13. 0-in. Vented rotors front, 11. 65-in. Rear--are designed for high performance.  the cobra also has different suspension tuning, including a slightly smaller front antiroll bar and a slightly larger bar in the rear, a combination designed to reduce understeer--the tendency for the car to go straight in hard cornering.  one thing the cobra isn't is cheap. Base price for this model is $24,810. The 4-cam (two cams per cylinder bank) v8 is a genuine sweetheart. The tachometer needle seems directly connected to the driver's right foot.  unlike typical american v8 engines that run out of wind at higher speeds, the cobra v8 cranks hard all the way to the redline. It has that high-revving, spirited feel we've come to know and love in high performance engines from germany and japan, and it's an absolute treat to operate.  with big tires, wheels and brakes, the cornering and stopping capabilities of the cobra are up to the high standard set by the wonderful engine. In the sense of absolute handling limits, the cobra is hampered slightly by its chassis design, which dates to the old ford fairmont. However, if the handling distinctions between the cobra and the camaro z28 might be measurable--in tenths of seconds--on a racetrack, it would tough to find any difference on public roads. interiorford engineers went to a lot of trouble to give the mustang a decent interior, and they've largely succeeded. Fairly tall drivers will find room for head and legs, and fairly short drivers can adjust the seat for adequate reach to all the controls. The seating position is also generally more upright than the camaro and firebird, which is generally more comfortable for extended periods of driving.  on the other hand, the mustang interior feels a little dated with its relatively tall, narrow dimensions, and some of the control locations could be better. Sound system controls, for example, are directly ahead of the shift lever, the fog lamp and headlight switches are on opposite sides of the steering wheel and the small center console has only one cupholder, which is awkwardly placed.  like almost every other sporty coupe, the rear seat is suitable for briefcases and/or a load of chinese takeout food--not for people. The big tires, firm suspension and superb brakes give the car an impressive range of performance in all areas. The ride is on the stiff side compared to mainstream sedans, but more comfortable than we expected and more supple than the camaro z28.  while the engine is terrific, the shifter is a little less endearing. It just keeps going and going and going. introductionwhen we're all old and gray they're still going to be selling these things. Jeep cherokee is a case study in how long a solid design can remain viable, even when some of its elements have become dated. Cherokees sprouted in suburban driveways like mushrooms. Jeep sold more than 165,000 cherokees in 1999 - more than what it sold the year before. The reason: it's tough as nails and starts at less than $17,000. Se comes with wind-up windows and vinyl upholstery. Air conditioning is optional.  sport models add the new 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine along with premium cloth. Sport models come packaged with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering column and a rear wiper washer. Classic adds a higher level of trim and nicer cloth.  limited models come with leather upholstery and other features. And in international markets, as well. Square, tough and durable.  the cherokee was the first unitbody sport-utility vehicle, as distinct from the traditional body-on-frame approach. There are two levels of 4wd available for the cherokee, part-time command-trac and full-time selec-trac. interiorcherokee's interior shows its age and comes up a little short in the comfort department. It was hard to perceive its interior as cramped or awkward, because by the standards of the day they weren't. Times have changed, however. Suvs have become luxurious station wagons. Without a major redesign, the cherokee hasn't kept up with that trend. Newer entries place a high priority on comfort. Compared to them, the cherokee measures up as pretty snug, particularly in the rear seat.  it's also uncomfortable for the driver. Adjust as we might we were never quite able to achieve an ideal driving position. Cherokee's limited front seat travel left us sitting closer than we wanted to be, and reaching up for the wheel rim. The primary instruments are a bit small, but the secondary array is a little more comprehensive than average, including an ammeter and oil pressure gauge.  it's possible to load the cherokee with comfort and convenience features, including a good sound system with cassette and cd players, air conditioning, power driver's seat, an overhead digital info center and two digital clocks. All of this stuff makes the going more pleasant, but we'd trade most of it for better seats. In fact, we suspect some people would dismiss the cherokee as choppy on this score, and mark it down to a relatively short wheelbase. That would be true -- as far as it goes. However, this is not an explorer, a sport-utility vehicle designed for people who see this breed as trendy station wagons. The combination of good ground clearance, short wheelbase and a favorable power-to-weight ratio make this boxy little veteran a tiger in the woods. As always, we'd prefer a manual transmission.  power notwithstanding, the cherokee's optional six-cylinder engine feels a little primitive compared to most of the v6 engines offered by jeep's competitors. An inline-6 is supposed to be an ideal design for smooth operation, but jeep's version generates noticeable vibration through most of its operating range. It's also surprisingly quick with the six-cylinder engine.  lack of caution in the option shopping process can escalate its price beyond reason; $27,000 seems like a lot to spend on one of these.
